The Problem of Arthritis By: Dr Terence Tan
What is arthritis? A joint is the part of our musculoskeletal system where two bones are connected. If there is any problem in your joints, this is likely to affect your movement. Joint pain alone is known as arthralgia. Arthritis is basically a joint problem involving inflammation and possible damage of the joints, especially if the patient does not get appropriate treatment. Possible Symptoms of Arthritis: Pain, joint stiffness and joint swelling are three common arthritis symptoms. If you suffer from arthritis, then your joint may swell, feel stiff, or look red. Diagnosis of Arthritis and Its Significance: If you feel that you might be suffering from the symptoms of arthritis, it is important to consult a doctor. Your doctor will take your medical history and probably conduct an examination of the affected joints and other related body parts. Investigations are sometimes needed. These may include testing of blood, urine, joint fluid and X-rays of the affected joints. Only with a proper diagnosis, arrived after a thorough history, physical examination, and relevant investigations, can suitable treatment strategies be discussed. Again, your doctor will be the appropriate person to advise you on the best options available for your problem.
