How To Improve The Aptitude To Recall Information And Overcome Test Anxiety

By: Alan B. Densky, CH

If you are a student who is endeavoring to get better grades, there are a list of methods that can help you to heighten your capability to focus your concentration, retain the information that you study, and recollect it during a test without being subjected to mental blocks or test anxiety. Here are the best ways that I know to establish good learning habits:

(1) Set aside a place for reading and only study in that place! Find a peaceful location that will facilitate a focusing of attention without distractions. Some usual examples would be a library, a vacant classroom, or your bedroom. You will want to establish the custom of studying when you are in this special place. So it is best to not use this place for other activities like daydreaming, conversations, or playing games, etc.

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STUDY PLACE HAS:

(a) A comfortable seat, but not excessively comfortable

(b) Your desk

(c) Excellent illumination

(d) Sufficient air flow

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR STUDY PLACE DOES NOT HAVE:

(a) Distracting views

(b) A phone

(c) Distracting music

(d) A big screen TV

(e) A companion who talks all the time

(f) A refrigerator filled with sweets

(2) Break up your study periods into small, short-range projects.

(a) Set up small specific goals like, "I am going to study my chemistry from 3 PM to 4 PM. Otherwise you will set yourself up to fall short.

(b) Set a reachable learning goal for the amount of time you are able to set aside. For example: finish reading chapter ten in my biology text book, or complete an initial draft of my English paper, etc. Set your goals when you you are ready to start studying but before you actually begin studying. Set reachable goals. You might do more than reach your goal, but set a reachable goal even if it seems way too easy.

(3) Test Anxiety & Phobias

(a) Some people experience physical symptoms for the most part, like nausea, feeling hot or cold, headaches, or faintness, etc.

(b) Other people experience mostly emotional symptoms, like feeling irritable, crying, or getting frustrated quickly.

(c) The main difficulty with anxiety is that it can make one have a memory block. Or it could trigger thoughts that are racing out of control.

(d) Although you may currently feel some level of anxiety while taking an examination, you can learn to significantly diminish that anxiety, or even completely eliminate it!

(e) Feelings of anxiety and the resultant stress are generally the main causes of a lack of the ability to focus your attention. Stress can also trigger a mental block when you try to recall information.

(f) Hypnosis CD's can be utilized to relax your mind and focus your concentration. As your mind calms down, your ability to stay focused will increase. Similarly, a calm mind enhances your ability to retain information, and recall it when it is needed.

(g) Hypnosis CD's can also be used to program your mind for the positive expectation of relaxation and the ability to recollect information during a test. This is valuable for diminishing or eliminating test anxiety. (h) There are a number of NLP techniques that can promptly get rid of a test phobia!
