The key thing to remember about teen weight loss is to develop much healthier eating habits. Presently teenage obesity is an increasingly serious problem, and there is plenty you can do as a parent in order to help your teen with any weight problems he or she are dealing with. Even though there is no silver bullet to helping your teen lose weight, the real key to succeeding is by helping them to develop a healthier lifestyle that they can then carry on into adulthood. Below are a few tips that parents can use when dealing with their overweight teens. 1. Resist using quick fixes in order to achieve rapid weight loss. Help your child by training them to lose weight, and then keep it off. Most of the fad diets out there are most likely to cheat your child of vital vitamins, iron and calcium that they need in their diet, as they are still growing. Don’t permit your teen to take weight loss pills or engage in other quick fixes, as they will not address the basis of the problem, and the effects of these types of treatments are short lived. Also, remember that only lasting changes in their lifestyle will keep the weight off. 2. Elevate the amount of physical activity your teenager does. Just like any adult, a teenager needs to do about 60 minutes of physical activity each day. But this does not mean that they have to do it all at once. Instead, they can do the activity in short bursts throughout the day in order to help burn off any excess calories. Team sports, which they do at school or at a local fitness center, is a great way for your teenager to get up and moving. However, if your child isn’t an athlete, or finds it difficult to participate in certain sports, then try to get them to walk, cycle or skate to and from school, or to walk a few times around the school before classes begin. Why not suggest that they spend at least one of each day away from the computer and do something a little more physical (may be you can get them to take the dog for a walk)? Also try and get them to do some household jobs, like vacuuming or washing the car, as provide some exercise as well. 3. Make sure your teen has a healthy breakfast. If you have a teen who discovers that it’s too difficult to get up, try to get them up a a bit earlier than usual in order for them to eat breakfast. Have you heard people say “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”? A nutritious breakfast will give them energy, boost their metabolism, and will provide them with the energy they need to make it through the day. Also, you may discover that it may stop them from eating too much during the remainder of the day. If your teen is not keen on high fiber cereal or whole wheat toast, then encourage them to eat what was left over from the night before. You could even suggest a piece of cheese, a small handful of nuts and a piece of fruit instead, as this will be just as good for them, and will do the same job as the cereal or toast does.
