Benefits of Idebenone in Anti-aging Skin Care Products

By: Geoff Hopkins

We are used to thinking anti-oxidants as part of dietary supplements to slow down the aging process and keep one's appearance healthy and younger-looking. But do you know one of the most active ingredients in the best anti-aging skin care products are antioxidants?

Idebenone is one of the most potent of the six leading antioxidants, although such sources as green tea extracts that contain catechin polyphenols and a form of fat-soluble Vitamin C called Ascorbyl Palmitate are used often when manufacturing the very best anti-aging serums and creams.

From the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, in a study done by a group of researchers who developed the first ever protocol to compare the efficacy of antioxidants on their effects on preventing free-radical skin-damage, Idebenone received a score of 95 out of a 100, which was the highest score among the six leading antioxidants.

Coenzyme Q10 or Co Q10 is a naturally occurring enzyme; Idebenone is a man-made analogue of this natural body product. Co Q10 is an essential antioxidant component of fatty or lipid membranes that surround every cell. Co Q10 also surrounds other little organs or organelles, such as microsomes and mitochondria, which are the inside cells. Idebenone is a synthetic cell energizer and it works by producing the needed energy for the reproduction of cells.

Idebenone differs very significantly from the natural Coenzyme Q10 in one area. CoQ10 can change its purpose from that of anti-oxidizing to an auto-oxidizing process, while in a low oxygen or hypoxic condition. When this happens the auto-oxidation begins to produce free radicals very quickly which leads to body tissues undergoing damage. Idebenone has proven in studies of research that in such cases to prevent the damage of free radicals and their damaging effect on the body, as Idebenone will relatively maintain the ATP levels of a normal cells development.

In order to understand how Idebenone provides anti-aging benefits we must read about mitochondrial processes in cells. The mitochondrial power plants produce over 90% of all cellular ATP bioenergy. They are also generally the richest sites in Co Q10 (or Idebenone). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) allows mitochondria to reproduce themselves.

Over the course of a lifetime our mtDNA becomes ever more damaged, and the mitochondria produced become ever more ineffective in their energy generation. The cells that are most susceptible to mitochondrial energy depletion with advancing age are the brain, skeletal muscle and heart muscle cells. As a result our cells die and various diseases develop in our advanced years.

Therefore the benefits of Idebenone, offers the result of anti-aging in several different ways. Idebenone serves as influential in reducing the free radicals of mitochondrial, while curbing the damage that occurs with aging and the increasing of mtDNA, dissimilar to Co Q10, while under conditions of low oxygen that can possibly occur throughout a lifetime. What this means is, Idebenone works much better than Co Q10, under hypoxic conditions within the chain of electron transport in keeping up the production of high energy.
