Going to your first yoga class can cause as much stress as going to a new school. It can seem a bit disheartening with all of the unusual yoga poses and the bizarre yoga exercise apparatus. But as an amateur it is important to remember the reasons why you became interested in this form of exercise. It has become a favorable and approachable practice that allows even the most inexperienced student to enjoy more flexibility and strength without all of the repetitive motion that is prevalent in other forms of exercise. For your first basic yoga session you will be introduced to a room full of other beginners who, like yourself, may be unsure why they came or if they are going to make any mistakes. Have no fear. An attentive yoga teacher will guide you through the asanas, or yoga poses. The responsibility of a yoga teacher is to guide you to get the best of a yoga pose both internally and physically. Along with the fluid movement of the yoga poses is the addition of a guided meditation that is meant to bring a sense of relaxation that will open up the possibility for self-awareness. To get the most of your yoga practice, it is best to find an attentive yoga instructor. If you have any questions, concerns, or injuries bring them up to your instructor prior to the start of class. This is so they can cater the session to your specific needs. You have a lot of options available to you if you decide to take your first basic yoga session. One is to talk with friends who may attend a studio in your neighborhood, second is to check out your local gym or even community center. Since yoga has become accessible to everyone from the youngest child to the seniors you are sure to find a class that will suit your schedule and level of experience. Remember that yoga is about bringing together the mind, body and spirit in an open and safe environment. It is up to you to take that opportunity to develop an improved perception of your body and of your environment.
